Overview Duties & Benefits Application & Selection Criteria FAQs

Help Moderate Backwash as a Columnist or Contributor and get lots of cool benefits!

Backwash is a community-run site that hand-filters the Internet and organizes it around personalities through columns, communities and recommended links. As you can imagine, it takes a lot of talented people in order to effectively provide this service and we are always looking for great people to assist in this task. Apart from a fun and supportive place to hang out on the ‘net, we offer many fine benefits for those who take on these positions.

If you are interested in joining our great team, then read on for details about all the benefits and for the application. We have three key positions at Backwash:

Contributors
Primarily post links to interesting content available on the Internet. You may post links you find yourself or cherry-pick the best links submitted by the Backwash audience. Contributors are encouraged to also moderate communities and to actively participate on the message boards and in the chat rooms.
This is an ideal position for those who prefer not to write columns, for those who wish to focus on recommending content or for those who wish to get their feet wet first before assuming more time consuming duties.
Requirements:
You need to be able to discern items of interest, be able to write an effective and coherent title and description, and be able to categorize it using our on-line admin form. Each link takes about one minute to properly categorize. You need to provide a minimum of FORTY links per month to maintain your status. Links may be posted at any time.
You need to maintain one channel. This means that you need to verify the links posted by other columnists and contributors have been classified in their proper category. This takes less than five minutes a day.
Contributors
Write interesting, quality columns of 250 words or more and recommend interesting content available on the Internet. Columnists should also moderate communities, channels and newsletters and actively participate on the message boards and in the chat rooms. The emphasis, however, is on quality original writing that will draw and appeal to an audience of strangers, as opposed to blogs / journals which appeal primarily to friends and family.
You should possess a strong personality and the ability to convey it through your writing, as well as the desire to lead a community built around your personality.
Requirements:
You need to write a quality column at least every two weeks. You should not post a new column more than three times a week. With your account, you will receive a free journal for which you may post your daily thoughts separate from your column.
You need to be able to discern items of interest, be able to write an effective and coherent title and description, and be able to categorize it using our on-line admin form. Each link takes about one minute to properly categorize. You need to provide a minimum of FIVE links for each column. Links may be posted independent of columns and count towards the five link minimum required to publish your next column. You may post links you find yourself or cherry-pick the best links submitted by the Backwash audience.
You need to maintain one channel. This means that you need to verify the links posted by other columnists and contributors have been classified in their proper category. This takes less than five minutes a day.
Contributors
Backwash likes to provide original high quality content to our readers. We understand that some fine writers don’t have the time to search the net to provide links and/or are looking to provide a more literary kind of column such as a collection of short stories, novels in progress, graphic novels, etcetera.
Backwash Lit Columnists may perform any of the additional duties performed by columnists and contributors, but they are not required to recommend content/ post links. Their work should be uniquely different from a standard column - such as a serial novel, plays or serial comic for example.
Because Lit Columns may receive more visibility than regular columns, we may also select Lit Columnists based on what they bring to the table. For example, if the columnist is a celebrity and/or has a large internet following and can help Backwash by bringing or drawing a large audience on their own to the site. Selection as a Lit Columnist is at our discretion and the standards are rigorous (and arbitrary).
Requirements:
You need to write a quality literary column at least every two weeks AND on a regular schedule that you clearly post on your page.
You need to host a chat at least once a month.
